Las Vegas

I am in Las Vegas right now, at an Information Assurance conference.

The conference has some neat tracks. It is being held at Caesar’s Palace hotel and casino. For several of the past years, it was at the Paris here in Las Vegas.

I’ve been to LV five or six times over the past decade or so. I have decided that I really have no use for the casinos or the opulent hotels.

Gambling doesn’t interest me. It’s too smoky in there anyway. I have been to a couple of the shows, and my very cute and big Phan roommate has been to see POTO here. She and the kids have been here three times now, and they have seen to the Star Trek experience, the aquarium, the MGM zoo, etc.

When I have come here, I look for things that are family fun. We’ve been to a couple museums (the National Atomic Testing Museum is an example), Red Rocks, Hoover Dam, and the like. There are really not that many things for a family to do.

Food isn’t a problem. We always find good places to eat off the Strip.

In the past, I have gone hiking at Mount Charleston, and I brought my golf clubs once. I used LV as a base to go to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I have been down to Lake Mead.

The sheer size of some of the hotels is amazing. Caesar’s Palace looks to have about eight pools; there seemed to be about 1,000 people around the pools at 1100 today.

If I were the city of Las Vegas, I would put together a web site for family activities.
